Highland and Islands Fire Board is the political entity that governs our Service.

The Service acts on behalf of the Fire Board, which is a Joint Fire & Rescue Board consisting of 24 members, comprising:

16 from the Highland Council
4 from Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council)
 2 from Orkney Islands Council
 2 from Shetland Islands Council.

Convener
Richard Durham
Highland Council
Vice-Convener
Andrew Drever
Orkney Islands Council

The Board has a number of subsidiary bodies including a Policy and Finance Working Group, an Integrated Risk Management Working Group and an Audit Working Group. The services of the Clerk to the Board, Treasurer's Office and other supporting services are supplied from Highland Council.

Over recent years the Board's key priority has been to obtain an adequate funding settlement that recognises the unique nature of service provision in the area. The current priorities include attracting sufficient capital funding to continue to progress with the Board’s ambitious building programme. Almost 40 of the Board’s fire stations are in need of replacement, to bring them up to modern day standards. Additionally, the replacement of the current fleet of fire appliances continues to be a concern for the Board, as it seeks to bring all of the Service’s vehicles up to a similar standard.
