Additional Funding for Highland & Islands Fire Brigade |
| Highland and Islands Fire Brigade are absolutely delighted with the announcement by the Scottish Executive that an additional £4million is to be made available this year. The money will address national pay increases, fund pay parity for Retained personnel and enable the Brigade to upgrade staff at 61 station locations from Auxiliary status to Retained. |
Firemaster Brian Murray stated that: "This increase in funding will result in the Highland and Islands being safer and better able to deal with emergencies than ever before. A determined effort over many years to improve our service by the Fire Board, the Brigade and the Firefighters who serve rural communities has brought about this transformation. It has been achieved in partnership with the Scottish Executive, the constituent Authorities in Highland, Orkney, Shetland and Western Isles as well as the Health and Safety Executive. It is very good news for the people of the Highland and Islands." |

National Fraud Initiative |
|
Highland and Islands Fire Board has a duty to protect the public fund it administers. To this end from time to time it may use information provided to it for the prevention and detection of fraud and share it with other bodies concerned with public funds solely for these purposes. The Board will be participating in an anti-fraud initiative organised by Audit Scotland and being carried out under powers in section 100 of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 and section 53 of the Local Government in Scotland Act 2003. Under this the Board will be required to provide details of employees to appointed auditors so that they can be compared with other information provided by the Board and by other public bodies to ensure that public funds are being paid only to persons who are entitled to them. For example, a comparison with housing benefit records to ensure that employment income is declared. While a key objective of the exercise is the detection of fraud, similar exercises have uncovered underpayments and other errors, which were rectified. These exercises, therefore, help ensure the best use of public funds. |
