Chief Fire Officer - Brian A Murray
Being Chief Fire Officer of Highlands and Islands Fire and
Rescue Service is a privilege. We protect people and help communities in their time of need
to deal with fires and other emergencies. I have one of the best jobs in the world. It
is very demanding, incredibly varied and very rewarding. On these pages I hope to give you an
insight into the challenges faced.
Our Service covers 1/6th of the UK landmass. We have 126 stations, 182 vehicles, 106 sets of hydraulic cutting gear, 3299 lengths of hose, 3277 fireboots (someone is hopping mad!) and we are one of the largest users of breathing air compressors with 78 in place and a further 12 arriving this year. These elements are important parts of the Fire and Rescue Service but on their own they are absolutely lifeless and offer no insight into why Highlands and Islands is so special. It is the people of this Service who are our real asset and it is they who set us apart from other organisations and other Brigades. For this reason many of the following pages highlight people who help make our part of Scotland safer.
