To enhance community safety a Community Response Unit (CRU) is based in Papa Stour providing a Service resource for the local area. Whilst the role of Community Response Units varies throughout the Service area (being tailored to match identified risk) the Papa Stour unit supports the Service by providing:

  •  The delivery of Community Safety information and education to drive down risk and enhance community safety.
  •  An intervention capability able to respond to outdoor fires.

In delivering the Community Fire Safety role the unit provides a valuable contribution to supporting the Service aim to reduce incidents through the promotion of Community Safety initiatives focused on local communities and identified vulnerable groups.

For their intervention capacity members of the unit have been fully equipped and trained to respond to outdoor fires, including the protection of property from wildfire.

Anyone wishing to access Community Safety advice or request a  visit from a member of the unit who would be please to conduct an informal Home Fire Safety Check should contact 01595 692318.

The Community we serve is a small remote island off the west coast of Shetland.  We are very isolated and have to be self reliant.  Crofting used to be the only activity here, but recently more diverse occupations exist.  Tourism, teleworking and pony breeding are now the main occupations.  The unit has its own website which can be found at www.papastour.shetland.co.uk/fire.html

When the Bixter fire unit was upgraded, we received their old fire trailer in 2003, which we now use to transport our pumps and equipment. This has improved our capabilities and effectiveness. Before this we had to load and unload the equipment before and after each practice, or turn out. There always was the risk that some important small item would be left back at the Store. We now have the knowledge that if we've got the trailer, we've got all our stuff! This picture shows the Fire Unit members alongside the trailer on the occasion of being presented Service Testaments by the Gideons on 2nd June 2004.
