The Community We Serve

The Bonar Bridge Auxiliaries cover an area as far East as Spinningdale 5 miles away and Midfearn 5 miles away. Strath Oykel 15 miles and Strath Carron 12 miles from Bonar Bridge. To the West, Achinduich and Linside 7 miles away and as far as Lairg 11 miles away.

The population of Bonar Bridge and Invershin is 536 and Ardgay is 462, so the area consists of approximately 1000 inhabitants.

      The community consists of three villages, Bonar Bridge, Ardgay, and Culrain, with two schools, council and private houses, various shops, hotels, Industrial areas, Bradbury Centre for senior citizens and Migdale Hospital. The scattered rural areas include farm and croft land and many dwelling houses and large estates as well as Carbisdale Castle one of the most unique and picturesque Youth Hostels in the world.

Most of the employment in the area consists of farming, crofting, civil engineering firm, building, joiner and painting contractors. The estates employ gamekeepers, shepherds, gardeners and domestic staff.

The community holds various activities during the year such as the Gala week, school fetes, fundraising such as Parent Teachers Association four-legged race, which the Bonar Bridge unit actively get involved.

Our Crew at present consists of nine committed and dedicated members of different ages and professions.

Sandy has been in the brigade for 31 years, he is a local Building contractor and Funeral Director. His hobby is the Fire Brigade! If there is something you wish to know regarding the local history or information about the Bonar Bridge Auxiliaries or the Brigade in general Sandy will know. Most of his day when not dealing with his own business matters consists of dealing with Fire Service issues and 'paper work.' Sandy is dedicated to his job and unfortunately will be retiring in June next year. He has just been awarded the Fire Masters Commendation Medal.


Leading Fire Fighter George Johnston                            

George has been a member of the Fire and Rescue Service for 13 years. He is local building contractor, and in his spare time enjoys fishing.


Raymond Macleod

Raymond has been a member of the Fire and Rescue Service for 28 years, and is due to retire this year. Raymond works for a local Civil Engineering firm and in his spare time works on his croft.


Douglas Henderson

Douglas has been a member of the Service for 12 years. He was a fencing contractor until recently, when Sandy and himself were involved in a RTA returning from a Fire Brigade training course. Unfortunately Douglas is still recovering from his injuries and is unable to participate in active duty at present.


Calum Murray

Calum has been a member of the Service for 10 years. Calum works for the Forestry Commission Research Department and in his spare time he enjoys Landscape Gardening.


Angus Ross

Angus has been a member of the Fire and Rescue Service for 8 years. He works offshore as a crane operator, and in his spare time he enjoys touring on his motorbike around Britain and the Continent.


Paul Maclaren

Paul has also been a member of the Service for 8 years. Paul used to be the local Postman but returned to college to study Leisure Management and Business Administration for four years. He works in LivingWell Health Club likes to keep fit and plays football for Bonar F.C.


Vince O'Hare

Vince has been a member of the Service for 3 years. Vince works with building contractor firm in Ross-shire. He has just completed the renovation of his house.


Ian Smith

Ian is the newest recruit and has been a member of the Service for 16 months. Ian works in Ardgay as a Postman and is currently building a house and all his spare time is devoted to completing it.
